General Information
KOS Publishing Inc. was founded in 2002 and is named after the island KOS on which Hippocrates was born. That name was chosen to suggest that current developments in medicine will prove to be a rebirth, in modern context, of the ancient insight into the interdependence of health, nutrition and environment. The symbol of medicine, the snake, symbolizes this concept as well. KOS Inc. is also committed to the political imperative in medical reform. KOS Publishing shares the ideal enunciated in the Hippocratic oath, that the practice of medicine and medical research ought to serve humanity and not commercial agenda. The books KOS Inc. publishes are intended to counteract the sickness industry of our time. KOS books serve to inform readers how politics impacts on medicine, how to get correct and useful information and how to tell the difference between medicine based on good science and politically influenced junk science serving profit instead of health.
Legal Issues
At KOS Inc. the author retains the copyright, not the publishing company. That allows the author to take his or her manuscript elsewhere should this seem desirable. Should KOS Inc. be unable to continue publication of a specific book, the copyright is not lost. The authors may use portions of their book for other purposes, KOS Inc. does not have to consulted or be paid a copyright fee in such instances or when translations into other languages are involved. KOS Inc. sees a book project as a cooperative venture with the author. Hence, the contracts are individual. One author may wish to have all the profits of the book go to a legal defence fund, a specified cause such as a clinic or political campaign, or retain his/her portion of the profits personally. This decision is up to the author alone.
Financial Information
Unless circumstance dictate this as a necessity, the cost of printing the book is advanced by KOS Inc. and must be the first item repaid upon publication. Following the payment of printing costs, administrative expenses, promotion and marketing costs, the profit is then divided between KOS Inc. and the author on a 50-50 basis so that KOS Inc. accumulates seed money for the publication of other books. The profit margin for the author increases substantially if the printing costs are covered by sponsors, such as the vitamin manufacturers and laboratories providing tests and analyses of the kind the author uses in his or her therapies. This approach has proven very successful. KOS Inc. retains the right to investigate the companies involved as sponsorships will not, at present, be accepted from any standard pharmaceutical companies whose products are on the stock-market (until they clean up their act ethically).
Information for Authors on Text Requirements
You may submit your manuscript in Word - floppy disk or CD. The manuscript must consist of the following, unless otherwise arranged with KOS Inc.:
- The text of the book.
- A bibliography that includes the scientific literature on which the book is based, so that both lay and professional readers are able to consult the primary sources of the arguments if they wish. This ensures a high standard of scientific accountability for all KOS books.
- A resource section which the reader can consult to find help, e.g. clinics, physician organizations, information centers etc.
- Treatment protocols, thus enabling the patient readers to discuss these treatments with their doctors and help educate them. (No proprietory information with regard to treatment.)
- An index is essential and will be prepared cooperatively with KOS Inc. Without an index the book is not eligible for an ISBN number and cannot be marketed to libraries and is usually not eligible for university or college course work.
Editorial Information
At KOS Inc. editorial interference will be minimal because we do not wish to make your book fit into a predetermined market, but hope the market will be generated through good new ideas. KOS Inc. likes to work with authors in a teamwork approach and provide all possible assistance and encouragement to get YOUR ideas and discoveries out into the world.
Books cannot be written mechanically, therefore, deadlines tend to be meaningless. Authors who are also practicing physicians, it is understood, run into time constraints, When your manuscript is ready for print, it takes 3 - 4 weeks for the galley proof to be ready and another 10 days for the first batch of books to be printed.
Marketing Information
Marketing medical books also requires dedicated teamwork between KOS Inc. and the author. The author is required to provide full information on his or her area for marketing, i.e. sell the book in the office, send out information on the book to patients and fellow physicians, approach their medical associations or specialty groups, etc. The author is expected to be available for book-signing events and lectures at health shows, medical conventions etc. - as applicable in the individual case. The same applies to interviews by the media. KOS Inc. has its own data base of customers and membership in bookseller associations, but that is not sufficient. Each book has its own specialized clientele as well. Without energetic marketing and advertising, as the old joke goes, it is like winking at a pretty girl in a dark theater - only you know what you are doing.
