A CLINICAL TRIAL
by Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, MD
New Spring Press
New York; 2010

As the keynote speaker at Whole Life Expo 2010, immunologist Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez will conduct a workshop on his renowned cancer therapy, entitled: “Alternative Medicine Takes on Cancer – And Wins.” Over the past decade, this cancer therapy appears to have so enraged the medical establishment, the pharmaceutical industry, and the regulatory system with its success, especially with the worst cancers (pancreatic and ovarian), that a gargantuan effort has been made to derail the formal clinical trial intended to examine this therapy. A Clinical Trial, his new book on that collusion between the highest levels of research and government, will be launched at the Expo on the weekend of November 26.

Bills C-51 and C-52
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality Magazine June 2008

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency,
sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Joseph Welch, chief attorney for the US Army to Senator McCarthy at the Un-American Activities hearings, June 9, 1954

DO WE WANT THIS?

On April 8 the Harper government introduced bill C-51 as an amendment to the Food and Drugs Act.  If passed into law, Canadians would no longer have the freedom to choose between pharmaceutical drugs and natural health products. The two categories we now have, namely drugs and natural health products, would be merged into “therapeutic products” and thereby become subject to toxicity testing and efficacy trials exactly the same as now required for artificial pharmaceutical drugs.

CODEX Update
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality October 2005

What do airplanes, pharmaceutical drugs and Codex Alimentarius have in common? Answer: a black box. When an airplane crashes, its black box, retrieved from the wreckage, contains the record of events up to the moment of the crash and enables analysts to determine the cause of the tragedy. The US Federal Drug Agency (FDA) “blackboxes” drugs when post-marketing experience shows they killed a lot of people and frequently produces potentially fatal side effects; doctors are informed accordingly in the US and Canada. When consulting the CPS (Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties), updated annually on all current drugs, you will see literally a black box under such drugs with warnings printed inside.

In fact, McGill University is now trying to re-introduce an Osler-based program “to make doctors more humane” (Medical Post, Oct. 18, 2005). Dr. Osler’s 1892 textbook, Principles and Practice of Medicine, trained doctors throughout the world until 1950, at which time Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, now in it’s 16th edition, replaced it. Sir William Osler is generally acknowledged to have been one of the greatest doctors in history.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month

It is preposterous, but Canada fell through that infamous rabbit hole.  Thousands of Canadians, whose numbers are growing annually, are now at the mercy of the policies of our medical Wonderland, where things have become “curiouser and curiouser”, as Alice would say. In this Canada Wonderland we find a Lyme disease policy which bears no resemblance to clinical observation, little to scientific research, and it ignores the fundamental principles of public health. Infectious diseases are very bad news – they are like an uncontained house fire.  Ironically, they also are the one universal emergency modern medicine really knows how to treat and prevent. Triumph over infectious disease is the basis of modern medicine’s fame.  It is, therefore, astounding that Lyme disease is virtually ignored in Canada.

On Animal Health:
March issue of Vitality Magazine

By Helke Ferrie

It is more than a decade ago now that I embarked on that steep learning curve that leads out of the morass of pharmaceutical propaganda into medicine that is curative and truly scientific, and attended my first medical conference. This was in Houston , Texas , and the presentations, according to the syllabus, all reported on advances in immunology. To my amazement, one of the presenters was a veterinarian who talked about curing cancer in horses, in this case mostly racehorses. The notion of curing cancer was then not only new to me, but outright cuckoo. His charts and tables, graphs and lab test results conformed to the expected hieroglyphics of medical science, as did his credentials. Nobody else but me seemed to be perplexed by the fact that most of these horses were cured of cancer, mostly by dietary interventions and massive supplementation of minerals, enzymes and vitamins, all of which measurably were shown to restore the immune system: the animal’s biochemistry changed so the cancer starved. In my astonishment I blurted out, “I didn’t know cancer could be cured!” The vet laughed, and I have never forgotten his reply: “A million dollar race horse is too great an investment to lose to cancer.”

Sickness for Beginners

Vitality February 2008

“Great is the power of steady misrepresentation.”

- Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882)

Everyone will sooner or later consult a doctor. That encounter may save your life dramatically in emergency medicine, or lead you into a living hell for a very long time and probably kill you if chronic disease and cancer are involved. For the latter, modern medicine offers drugs derived from mind-numbingly complex synthetic chemistry, which are purposely designed to control symptoms and ensure loyal “consumers” until death -  usually from the side effects, one of which is chemically induced nutritional deficiency. Indeed, package inserts clearly state “this drug does not cure”. The word cure has become a four-letter word in

Book Review - Slow Death By Rubber Duck – How The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects Our Health

After having read Shawn Buckley’s analysis of Ottawa’s bill C-6 in this issue, go to the next book store and pick up a copy of this book. Buckley’s deconstruction of C-6 shows it to be a low-brow legislative crowd-control measure, aimed at intelligent citizens, which buys plenty more time for the toxic chemical industry to continue making a killing in more than one sense.

BOOK REVIEW published in Vitality, December 2005 and Medical Veritas, spring 2006
By Helke Ferrie

Selling Sickness: How the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies are turning us all into patients by R. Moynihan & A. Cassels, Nation Books, 2005, ISBN I-56025-697-4.

A documentary film version is available through Paradigm Pictures.

According to Greek mythology, a girl named Pandora became curious about the contents of a mysterious box; she opened it a crack and out rushed all the diseases now plaguing humanity. Horrified, she slammed the lid shut, trapping Hope at the bottom.  Within the past few years, intrepid researchers have begun to open that box to let out Hope. But, without Truth, Hope is little more than the desperation that inspires buying lottery tickets. Today, the chances of regaining one’s health through most standard medicine are about as good as winning the jackpot. Until all the truth is out about the corruption of medicine, hope has no power.

Taking Back the Planet and Our Health
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality, November 2007

“…Some of us were miraculously presented
Each with a goose that laid a golden egg.
Myself, I killed the cackling thing and ate it.
Alas, many and many of the other recipients
Died of gold-dust poisoning.”

Muriel Spark

Almost everything that is known to nourish life or heal disease has become yet another golden-egg-laying goose. The gold dust from their eggs is a poison more addictive and more fatal than crack cocaine or booze and is responsible not only for Global Warming, but especially for the cancer and chronic disease industry.

The Secrets of the Heart
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality Magazine August/September 2006

The heart is not merely a sophisticated pump. In an Egyptian text from three thousand years ago, The Instructions of Amenemope, the heart is described as the source of thought and the seat of the “Universal Lord, the pilot of the ship of human life.” The very word “heart” meant “intelligence” as well as “mind” and the Egyptians believed that one’s conscience arose from the heart which the Book of the Dead states is a person’s “own god”.  All of these metaphors are now supported by medical science.

THE WORLD WITHOUT US
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality Magazine May 2008

“Not only the reason of millennia – the madness of
millennia, too, breaks out in us…we are still fighting,
step by step, with that giant Chance. Truly, the Earth
shall yet become a house of healing!”

F. Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra, 1885

I am always amazed by the fact that so many people think that humanity is a cancer on the Earth, that the planet would be better off without us, and that it wouldn’t be a great loss if we become extinct. Well, I absolutely disagree. I sincerely wish all of us well for many more million years to come. I have no more given up on the human race than I have given up on myself, and if humanity became extinct, I think it would be a tragedy of cosmic proportions. Had I been confronted with that cynical Mr. Smith in The Matrix, who found humanity disgusting because “you are like viruses” that destroy everything, I would have told him that virology is a very interesting science and that he should look into it to improve his mood.  I would have also told him that humans, unlike viruses, reflect on their behavior, which causes them infinite grief and joy – viruses haven’t a clue about either

Thought for Food
By Helke Ferrie

The root of the word “religion” is the Latin religiere, meaning “careful consideration”. Since humans are thoughtful as well as greedy, this overview of biotechnology and organics is complex, because good thinking sometimes sabotages biotech, and greedy delusions infiltrate organics.  The curse of interesting times is upon us.

TOXIC DRINKING WATER
How Fluoridation is Endangering Public Health in
Favour of Government and Corporate Interests
Vitality Magazine October 2010
by Aliss Terpstra

It is destructive to democracy and human rights when any government agency claims to have the authority to cause harm to our health with a toxic substance, denies the harm, denies the toxicity, and then says the harm and toxicity are justifiable.

UNDERSTANDING DRUGS
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality Magazine March 2008

Street drugs kill about 20,000 people a year in North America , but prescription drugs kill about 700,000 annually, making legal drugs the leading cause of death. Drug side effects cause 8.8 million hospitalizations annually, or 28% of all hospital admissions.

Time for Celebration

By Helke Ferrie
Vitality November 2009

You are invited to a great annual bash this month, namely Toronto’s Whole Life EXPO (November 27-29), where for the 23rd year we can celebrate health, critical thinking, and the inexhaustibility of good ideas. I intend to be there with a great, big organic, home-made carrot cake at the Kos Publishing booth to celebrate the fact that I have been writing for Vitality for 10 years!  If you got shocking, empowering, and thought-provoking information from my articles, I am very happy  - but just think what a dizzying learning curve it has been for me! Writing for an information-hungry audience imbued with doubt, and ready to question any claim to authority, has been a journey towards enlightenment and an exercise in humility.  It has also been a breathtaking trip through medical politics as it unfolded – with editor Julia Woodford hot on my heels wanting it all in print for you.

Book Review
By Helke Ferrie
“What to Eat” by Marion Nestle

What To Eat  by Marion Nestle, North Point Press, New York , 2006. Available on amazon.com in paperback for $ 10.

Marion Nestle is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University .  Having served as a policy advisor to the US government’s Department of Health and Human Services and on the scientific advisory committees of the FDA, she is intimately acquainted with the ruthless tactics the five giant food retailers use to ensure shareholder satisfaction, more often than not in contravention of what is known in nutritional science. There is now no doubt that the processed, over-sugared, over-salted, artificially flavored and preservative-loaded foods crowding our supermarket shelves have become a hazard to public health. A hundred years ago, nutrition-related disease was almost exclusively a function of lack of food or toxicity from spoilage, since refrigeration and preservation methods were in their infancy. Today, as Nestle shows in this unique book, with the advent of long-distance transportation and modern preservation methods, supermarket foods are the primary reason we have a diabetes and obesity epidemic; indeed, 60% of Americans are clinically obese.

WILL THE TRUTH MAKE MEDICINE FREE?
By Helke Ferrie

“The Truth shall make you free.”

Gospel of St. John

“The Truth shall make you free – but first it hurts.”

Gloria Steinem

Nicolas Regush, well known for his masterful investigative reporting on health issues for CBC radio and television, wrote shortly before his death the following observation:

There is no way to be nice about this. There is no point in raising false hopes.  There is no treatment or vaccine in sight. There is no miracle breakthrough on the horizon.  Medicine, as we know it, is dying.  It is entering a terminal phase.  What began as an acute illness reached the chronic stage about a decade ago and progression towards death has been remarkably swift and well beyond anything one could have predicted. The disease is caused by conflict of interest, tainted research, greed for big bucks, pretentious doctors and scientists, lying, cheating, invasion by the morally bankrupt marketing automatons of the drug industry, derelict politicians and federal and state regulators  -  all seasoned with huge doses of self-importance and foul odor.”

THE YEAR THAT WAS AND THINGS TO COME
By Helke Ferrie
Vitality, December 2009/January 2010

Corruption, stupidity, and greed are best viewed as dispassionately as one views household chores. Don’t get mad. Don’t get depressed. Just help clean up the mess. Forming the habit of calmly resisting the chaos that keeps sneaking up on us ensures a balance is maintained between the forces of darkness and creative humanity. The messes of 2009 were formidable. Talking to hundreds of people during this year’s EXPO was at times exhilarating because nobody appears to feel so victimized as they used to in past years. There is an air of empowerment dancing through the public psyche. Instead of the worried faces speaking of what “they” are doing to wreck food, medicine and human rights, everybody was reporting on what they themselves were doing to expose lies and how they were opposing that sneaking tyranny our government keeps offering under the guise of protection.  Space only permits discussing four areas interesting to Vitality readers.

Dernieres Nouvelles À Propos Du CODEX
Vitality, Octobre 2005
